Today's Lesson:
Introduce IB biology
introduce the syllabus with objectives (IBO Biology Course Outline)
introduce Internal Assessment guide (handbook)
Introduce major events: Grp 4 project, Exams (yr 2), internal assessment, local (GSIS) grading, etc.
each student email me with their class (A_HL biology_Jay Reimer) in subject line: block_coursename_yourname) This will enable me to set up email lists right away!
Introduce material list: each student should bring: textbook, computer, Ti-84 calculator and pen,pencil, eraser to class EVERY day.
Go to jayreimer.com, look for "download" link and download Logger Pro (Vernier software which we will use for a lot of labs this year) After you download softare keep it on your desktop and I will provide the password for installation NEXT period. [I cannot post it here on the intenet]
Collect real data (for first unit in statistical analysis.
In class today (in ALL my classes) we will collect individual physical data from students for use in the first unit. This will not be prepped, sterile data but real measurements of you and your friends!
Distribute sticky note to each student (or use Google forms if students are up and running right away on their computers).
Write their name & block on the Post It note.
Record their age in months (use birth as time 0, not 1 year in the way Korean's traditionally date their age.) Students will need some help with this; simply round to the nearest whole month.
Record height (using meter sticks taped to the wall; read to the nearest cm (ignore mm).
Use dry spirometer to determine maximum lung capacity for each person in class. Instrument reads cc as 1000 with increments marked at 100 cc level.
Lastely students weight themselves on the bathroom spring scale (to the nearest kg).
NOTE: Let students know that teacher will compile this data and return it to them so that everyone's weight (to be considerate of girls) will be anonymous. Next day, all students will receive a spreadsheet with data but WITHOUT students names.
Assignment:
Students receive data in columned table (via Gogle Doc) and make graph (of their choice: pie graph, histogram, bar graph, scatter graph, line graph...)
Students attempt to put error bras on graph (we will learn about them tomorrow; this evening "try it."
